Research Associate To Develop Nano-Optical Actuators at University of Cambridge

The funds for this post are available for one year in the first instance.

 

Within the Cavendish Laboratory there is an ongoing research programme on mechanical actuators and artificial muscles based on carbon-nanotube polymer composites and liquid-crystalline elastomers. The current project aims to develop smart polymeric materials capable of light-induced actuation, as a part of a large European FP7 NMP grant "Nano-Optical Mechanical Systems" together with academic and industrial partners from the UK, Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Slovakia, aiming at developing haptic visual-aid tablet displays for the blind.

 

Candidates should have a PhD in material science, chemistry, physics or engineering, demonstrated experience in processing of polymeric materials (ideally, able to carry out organic synthesis) and with a track record of high-quality publications. It is expected to have candidates in post by 1 December 2009.
