Admission Notification for Ph.D. (Neuroscience) and Integrated Ph.D. (Neuroscience) Programmes for the academic year 2011-2012
National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) is a premier institution engaged in research in the frontier areas of Neuroscience to understand the function of healthy and diseased brain. With the goal to provide seamless transition from classroom training to high-quality research in challenging areas of Neuroscience, NBRC offers Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programmes in Neuroscience for exceptionally meritorious and motivated students. Admissions for the year 2011 will be through a written test followed by a 2-tier interview. In this regard, NBRC invites applications for its Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programmes. The research areas in NBRC are broadly divided into :


    1. Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience 2. Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience 3. Computational Neuroscience and Neuro Imaging
In addition to basic aspect, research projects focus on translational and clinical neuroscience also.

ELIGIBILITY
    Ph.D. (NEUROSCIENCE)*
  1. Master's degree or equivalent in any branch of Science such as Life Science / Physics/ Chemistry / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer application / Pharmacy / Veterinary Science/ Psychology
    OR
  2. A minimum of four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering / Technology / Medicine.
  INTEGRATED Ph.D. (NEUROSCIENCE)*, #
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any branch of Science such as Life Science / Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer applications / Pharmacy / Veterinary Science / Psychology / Engineering / Technology / Medicine.
*Candidates appearing for final year of the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply.
# On successful completion of the Integrated Ph.D. programme the students will be awarded both an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. Degree.

GENERAL INFORMATION
NOTE :
  1. Only the candidates with a track record of at least 55% (For SC/ST/PH candidates 50%) marks (No rounding off; candidates should mention their percentage calculated up to two decimal points) or equivalent grade from secondary (10th) examination onwards will be considered to be called for the written test.
  2. Mere fulfillment of minimum requirement will not entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.
  3. Only the candidates called for the interview will be paid ordinary sleeper class train fare from the nearest railway station, on production of tickets.
  4. The written test will consist of 2 sections. Section 1 will have questions on General Knowledge or General Awareness related to Science. Sections 2 will have questions on the subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. In section 2, the candidates are required to attempt questions on any 3 subjects. All the questions will be "multiple choice" type.
    The candidates will have to attempt both the sections and be in the required merit to be considered to be called for the interview.
    The difficulty level of questions on the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics will be of Higher Secondary (10 + 2) level for both written tests for Integrated Ph.D. and Ph.D. programmes. However, the difficulty level of questions on the subject Biology for Integrated Ph.D. will of B.Sc. (Pass) level for Integrated Ph.D. programme and it will be of B.Sc. (Hons.) i.e. slightly higher than B.Sc.(Pass) level for Ph.D. programme.
  5. The candidates who have qualified for JRF in CSIR/ UGC/ICMR/ICCSR/DBT or any other equivalent national examination will also need to appear for the entrance test.
  6. Candidates appearing for final year of the qualifying examination will be required to submit the proof of having passed in the examination latest by 15th July, 2011. If selected, their selection will be provisional and subject to production of proof of qualifying in the respective examination with the required cut-off percentage.
  7. Candidates claiming equivalence to any of the degrees mentioned in this advertisement will have to furnish satisfactory proof from appropriate authority. NBRC reserves the right to accept or reject it. No correspondence will be entertained in this regard.
  8. Concessions / Reservation to SC / ST and PH candidates will be as per Government of India / UGC / NBRC policy. Candidates belonging to SC / ST /PH categories are required to submit an attested copy of the certificate in support of their claim for reservation, at the time of appearing for the written test failing which they will not be permitted to appear for the written test.
  9. Candidates who are interested to pursue Integrated Ph.D. or Ph.D. programme at NBRC, are required to apply by giving details as per the application form available online and also a declaration to that effect as required there in. No scanned copies of documents in respect of student's qualifications etc. need to be sent at the written test stage. (Please refer to below, point 'D' given under the sub-head 'Application Procedure' )
SELECTION PROCEDURE
Shortlisted candidates after the written test will be called for a two-tier interview at NBRC. The final selection will be based on the performance in the interview. The dates for the interview will be intimated later, and will also be posted on NBRC website.
The decision of the screening / selection committee will be final and no correspondence in this regard will be entertained. Canvassing in any form will disqualify the applicant. The candidates finally selected for the Ph.D. or Integrated Ph.D. programmes will be eligible for scholarship as per NBRC rules and will be provided hostel accommodation on a sharing basis.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
  1. The candidates are required to submit their duly filled-in applications online along with the requisite fee. The candidates are solely responsible for the correctness of figures and facts and veracity of the statements made in the application. The applications which are found either now or later on to have wrong or misleading facts or statements will be liable to be rejected. Even after admission is given if some information provided in the application is found to be misleading or wrong, such admission will be cancelled. The candidates have to give a declaration to this effect in the prescribed manner in the application.
  2. The candidates should also send the Registration Number allotted to them after they submit their application online, to the e-mail ID: admissions2011 @nbrc .ac .in. In all their future correspondence invariably they should quote this number as reference number.
  3. The application fee is Rs. 700/- for general candidates and Rs. 350/- for SC/ST/PH applicants The application fee (non refundable) should be paid in the following manner:
    1. The requisite application fee should be sent by NEFT mode to our State Bank of India, Manesar Branch account number (given below) by providing the desired details to the respective Bank from where you desire to make the transfer of funds. The following details may be asked:

      c. Remitter's name and address:  (applicants have to give their details)

      e. Details of payment: NBRC admissions – 2011 application fee
      Once the transaction is completed you will get an UTR number from the Banker and it should be entered at the relevant column in the online application form.
    3. As an alternative option, if you are not able to send the requisite fee by NEFT mode, you may send the fee by way of Demand Draft drawn from any branch of State Bank of India, drawn in favour of 'Director, National Brain Research Centre', on MANESAR (Code No. 3370) or Service Branch New Delhi (Code No. 7687). The Registrartion Slip (that you get on submission of online application) and the demand draft should reach the office of Registrar, National Brain Research Centre, Nainwal Mode, NH-8, Manesar – 122 050 latest by 18th February 2011.
  4. There is no need to send any testimonial at the time of application Scanned copies of all certificates/degrees from secondary (10th) onwards, and a passport-size photograph, will be required to be sent only by such candidates who are shortlisted to be called for the interview. These items should be sent to the Registrar, National Brain Research Centre, Nainwal Mode, NH-8, MANESAR – 122 050. District: Gurgaon (HARYANA) latest by 15th April 2011.

The written test for Integrated Ph-D programme will be conducted during forenoon from 10 A.M. to 12 Noon and for Ph-D programme it will be conducted during afternoon from 2 PM to 4 PM on 13th March, 2011, at Allahabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai (any test centre may be cancelled or altered at the discretion of NBRC). The applicants who have opted cancelled centre will be allotted alternate test centre and intimated in the admit card. Detailed information in this regard will be placed on NBRC website and such applicants will be informed accordingly by e-mail for downloading the admit cards from 25th February, 2011 onwards for the written test.
