GATE 2012
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), 2012, the All India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India with Indian Institute of Technology Delhi as the Organizing Institute, will be conducted on January 29, 2012 (Online) and February 12, 2012 (offline).
Admission to Postgraduate Programmes with MHRD and some other Government Scholarships/Assistantships in Engineering Colleges/Institutes is open to persons who qualify in GATE examination. Those with Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/ Technology / Architecture or Master ’s Degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications, who qualify in GATE examination, are eligible for admission to Master’s Degree Programmes in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science with MHRD or other Government scholarships/assistantships.
One must secure admission to such a Postgraduate Programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution, to avail the Scholarship. Those with Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture may seek admission to relevant Doctoral programmes with scholarship/assistantship without appearing in the GATE examination.
Qualification in GATE is also a minimum requirement to apply for various fellowships awarded by many Government Organisations. GATE will have a single paper of 3 hours duration, containing 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
GATE is conducted in 21 subjects.
They includeAerospace Engineering (Code-AE), Agricultural Engineering (AG), Architecture and Planning (AR), Biotechnology (BT), Civil Engineering (CE), Chemical Engineering (CH), Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Chemistry (CY), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC), Electrical Engineering (EE), Geology and Geophysics (GG), Instrumentation Engineering (IN), Mathematics (MA), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Mining Engineering (MN), Metallurgical Engineering (MT), Physics (PH), Production and Industrial Engineering (PI), Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF), Engineering Sciences (XE) and Life Sciences (XL)
XE (Engineering Sciences) and XL (Life Sciences) papers are of general nature. XE (Engineering Sciences) paper will have 7 sections, A -Engineering Mathematics (Compulsory), B -Fluid Mechanics, C-Materials Science, D-Solid Mechanics, E-Thermodynamics, F-Polymer Science and Engineering and G-Food Technology.
XL (Life Sciences) will have 6 sections, H-Chemistry (Compulsory), I-Biochemistry, J-Botany, K-Microbiology, L-Zoology and M-Food Technology.
Section A is compulsory in XE paper and Section H is compulsory in XL paper. Candidate can choose any two out of the remaining sections listed against the respective papers, at the time of examination.
Each of the 21 GATE papers will have a General Aptitude (GA) component carrying 15 marks. Thus a candidate appearing in XE or XL paper will be required to answer three sections apart from the General Aptitude (GA) questions.
A candidate can apply for only one of the 21 papers offered. The choice of the appropriate paper can be made by the candidate keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he/she wishes to seek admission. A candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her qualifying Degree but is; free to choose any paper according to his/her admission plan. However, requests for change of GATE Examination paper after the submission of Application Form will not be considered.
All papers other than those with codes, AE, AG, AR, GG, MN and TF will have multiple choice type questions. In AE, AG, AR, GG, MN and TF papers, the question paper will consist of questions of multiple choice type and also some questions of numerical answer type. Each multiple choice question will have four choices. For numerical answer type questions, each question will have a number as the answer.
The examination for Aerospace Engineering (Code-AE), Agricultural Engineering (AG), Architecture and Planning (AR), Geology and Geophysics (GG), Mining Engineering (MN) and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) will be conducted online using computers where the candidates will be required to enter the answer for each question using mouse. For all other papers, the examination will be offline where the candidates will have to mark the correct choice on an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question. There will be negative marking for each wrong answer, except for the numerical answer type questions.
The Online Examination for Architecture and Planning (AR), Geology and Geophysics (GG) and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) will be held from 9 am to 12 noon on 29th January, 2012 (Sunday) and that for Aerospace Engineering (AE), Agricultural Engineering (AG) and Mining Engineering (MN) from 2 pm to 5 pm on 29th January, 2012 (Sunday) at Bengaluru-Code115; Hyderabad-116; Mangalore-117 (IISc Bengaluru Zone); Ahmedabad-232; Mumbai-233; Pune-234 (IIT Bombay); Delhi-318; Gurgaon-319 ; Jaipur-320 (IIT Delhi Zone) ; Durgapur-416 ; Guwahati-417; Patna-418 (IIT Guwahati Zone); Allahabad-515; Kanpur-516; Lucknow-517 (IIT Kanpur Zone); Kolkata-622; Vijayawada-623; Visakhapatnam-624 (IIT Kharagpur Zone); Chennai-736; Coimbatore-737; Ernakulam-738 (IIT Madras Zone); Chandigarh-824; Noida-825 and Roorkee-826 (IIT Roorkee Zone).

Eligibility
Applicant should be (i) a Bachelor’s Degree holder in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2) or should be in the final year of such programmes OR (ii) a Master’s Degree holder in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent or should be in the final year of such programmes OR (iii) studying in the 2nd or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master’s Degree Programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology OR (iv) Should be studying in the 4th or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master’s Degree programme or Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology OR (v) should have qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by Professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by Institute of Engineers (India); AMICE by Institute of Civil Engineers (India)) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.
Pre-final year students are not eligible to write GATE 2012.
Applications can be submitted only online. Registration and Submission of Application starts on 12th September 2011 at https://gate2012.iitd.ac.in/iitweb/. The site will be opened for public at 00:00 hrs on 12th September 2011 and the site will be shutdown at 23:00 hrs on 17th October 2011. Registration and application submitted before 12th September 2011, will not be considered.
Candidate may also go to the ‘Apply Online’ link at http://gate.iitd.ac.in/GATE/index.phpfor Registration and submission fo Application online. The applicant will have to first register by entering name, date of birth, password and email id and then fill in the ONLINE application form, proceed to make the payment of application fee using Payment Gateway or Challan Payment options.
The Application Fee is Rs.1000/- for General and OBC candidates and Rs.500/- for SC/ST categories and PD (Persons with Disability) category. Payment of fee can be made using net banking on payment of a maximum of Rs.30/- extra, as Bank service charge. Payment can also be made in cash using the Challan prescribed at ICICI, Indian Bank or State Bank of India branches which would collect a maximum of Rs.25/-, in addition to the fee, as Bank service charge. The directions/instructions in this regard will be available during the process of online registration.
Candidates must follow the instructions provided while applying online. At the end of the process, a PDF file will be generated with 5 pages. Page-1: Instructions; Page-2: GATE 2012 Application-GATE Copy; Page-3: GATE 2012 Application-Candidate's Copy; Page-4: Address Slip of respective zonal GATE office and Page-5: Bank Challan (for Challan Payment option only). Candidate has to take a print out of the entire file on A4 size white sheets using a laser/inkjet printer. In case of Challan Payment option, the bank challan (Page-5) will be printed in triplicate. The applicant should take it to any one of the branches of ICICI, Indian Bank or State Bank of India (as opted by the candidate) and pay the fees. Bank will retain a copy and will return the other two copies to the candidate who should retain the Candidate's copy with him/her and attach the GATE Copy with the application.
Candidate should Paste his/her recent photograph (3.5 cm X 3.5 cm) in the designated place, on Page-2. Before pasting the photograph, the candidate should write his/her name and application number on the backside of the photo with black ball point pen. Candidate should sign at the designated place on f Page-2. Page-4 should be pasted on the top of a laminated envelope of size, 10 inch x 12 inch.
Applicant has to attach either a copy of the Degree Certificate or provisional certificate if they have passed their qualifying degree in 2011 or before. Students in the final year of Bachelor's Degree Programme in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2); Students in the final year of Master's Degree programmes in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent; Students in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master's Degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology and Students in the fourth or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master's Degree programme or Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology, should submit a certificate in the format provided, that can be downloaded from http://gate.iitd.ac.in/GATE/pdffiles/college.pdf, signed by the Principal of the college, where the candidate is studying, clearly indicating the year of passing of the candidate in the qualifying Degree.
Candidates with a backlog of papers should submit a copy of the marks sheet of eighth semester (for those in Bachelor's Degree programme in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture or equivalent) or a copy of the marks sheet of fourth semester (for those in Master's Degree programmes in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent). SC/ST/PD Certificates are to be obtained and submitted if applicable.
