Applications are invited for the Ph. D. Programme for the academic session 2012, spring semester for biological sciences, chemical sciences, earth sciences, mathematics & statistics, and physical sciences.
Eligibility:
The qualification for the Ph.D. programme is Masters degree from any recognized University/Institute or its equivalent. Final year Masters students who are yet to obtain their degree may also appear in the admission procedure. At the time of admission only candidates with a M.Sc. or equivalent degree with at least 55% marks in the subject concerned will be considered. However, for candidates awaiting their results, provisional admission may be allowed with special permission of the Director.
Subject-----Eligibility Criteria
Earth Sciences
(Geophysics, Elemental & Isotope Geochemistry, Paleontology, Structure & Tectonics, Petrology, Quaternary geology & Tectonic geomorphology, Environmental engineering)
Masters degree in Earth Sciences and any other allied field and qualified in any National Eligibility Test (e.g., CSIR/UGC/NET-LS/NET-JRF/GATE/ INSPIRE)
Biological Sciences
Masters degree and who have qualified in the UGC/CSIR NET JRF or have other equivalent fellowship like DBT, ICMR, INSPIRE and ICAR etc are eligible to apply.
Mathematics & Statistics
Masters degree and who have qualified in the UGC/CSIR NET JRF or have other equivalent fellowship like INSPIRE and NBHM.
Theoretical Chemistry
Masters in any branch of Chemical Sciences and qualified in any National Eligibility Test (e.g., CSIR/UGC/NET-LS/NET-JRF/GATE/ INSPIRE)
Chemical Sciences
Masters in any branch of Chemical Sciences and who have qualified in the UGC/CSIR NET JRF or have other equivalent fellowship like INSPIRE are eligible to apply.
Physical Sciences
Masters in any branch of Physical Sciences and who have qualified in the UGC/CSIR NET JRF or have other equivalent fellowship like INSPIRE are eligible to apply.

When to apply:
For the Spring Session (starts from January, 2012), candidates should apply online latest by September 21, 2011.

The applicants should open the link given below and properly fill the application form as instructed and submit. Applicants should save the properly filled application form and take a print as the hard copy of the application.

Selected candidates for test/interview should bring a hard copy of application along with the required documents listed below at the time of test/interview:
Attested copies of mark sheets and certificates of all examinations starting from high school leaving, two letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes) and a statement of purpose (not exceeding 300 words), two passport size photographs, photo identity and proof of age.
Selection procedure:
List of shortlisted candidates (based on merit, subject specialization and required research area) for Test/Interview will be published in the IISER-Kolkata website tentatively in the first week of October, 2011. The test/interview will be held tentatively in the first week of November, 2011. The selected candidates will receive the offer letter containing also the last date for joining shortly after the interview.
Course Work and Laboratory rotation:
The Research fellows will have to do course work and laboratory rotations during first six months. The course content will be decided by the department concerned for each student according to his / her need. Ph. D. Supervisor will be selected only after the course work/Laboratory rotation.
