National Institute of Technology Calicut commences a Two year M.Sc. Degree programme in Physics in 2012. The programme will admit bright, highly motivated students with Bachelor’s degree in Physics, selected on an all-India basis to study at NIT Calicut. The aim of the programme is to prepare students for a research career in academia or industry, with strong basics in fundamental aspects of the subject and exposure to the latest research trends. The programme curriculum and syllabi is designed to cover all major Ph.D level entrance examinations like UGC, CSIR, GATE, JEST etc. at the national level.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
The programme, offered by the Department of Physics is spread over four semesters of course work, involving core courses, electives and laboratory courses, upon successful completion of which the candidates will be awarded a M.Sc. (Physics) degree of NIT Calicut. The core courses in the curriculum are identical to ones taught in any regular M.Sc. programme in the country, which lay the foundations for research in any area of Physics. Students can opt for their area of interest or curiosity by choosing elective courses with the advice of department faculty. Project work and seminar activities are part of the curriculum to develop the research talent of the students.
WHO CAN APPLY
Candidates having a first class Bachelors degree with Physics as main subject and Mathematics as one among subsidiary subjects or triple main including Physics and Mathematics are eligible to apply for the programme (suitable relaxation of criteria will be given to SC/ST candidates as per rules). An entrance test will be conducted by the Institute to choose suitable candidates from among the eligible. Details of eligibility can be found on the NIT website by April 2012.

National Institute of Technology Calicut is a premier Technological Institution of national importance, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, set up by the National Institute of Technology Act (2007) of the Indian Parliament. Set in a picturesque landscape at the foothills of the Western Ghats, NITC is located about 22 kilometres east of Calicut city of Kerala State and offers a placid environment for learning and research. The institute offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs in Science, Engineering and Management disciplines. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Physics at NIT Calicut is emerging as a major centre for teaching and research in Physics and its applications. The department offers a B.Tech. programme in Engineering Physics. Ph.D. programmes are offered in a variety of frontier research and multi-disciplinary thrust areas. The department has acquired the distinction of having the state of the art in Research and Development facilities attracting impressive external funding and publications. It has well qualified faculty trained in premier institutions in India and abroad, in areas of specializations like Condensed Matter Physics (Experiment & Theory), Optics and Photonics, Photonic Materials, Atmospheric Physics and Applied Spectroscopy. The department has excellent facilities to do advanced graduate experiments in Electronics and Photonics and these have been made a part of the curriculum.
