Short term Project works for M.Sc., M.Tech, M.Phil, M.Pharm AND MCA PROGRAMMES
Induction of the students in few numbers from Universities / colleges for carrying out short term project work in CSIR – National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) laboratory will be made based on the requirement of R&D activities of the Institute on case to case basis. However, the number of such admissions which may vary from time to time, will be based only the requirement of the scientists of R&D Division/Sections of the Institute followed by the merit.ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
1. M.TECH
Students procuring any one of the eligibility criteria can apply for M.TECH projects
a. Students having a valid GATE score studying in any college/university
b. Students studying in Institutions of National Importance like IITs, NITs, and Central Universities etc.
c. Students studying in Government or Government aided colleges and if there course is in the fully aided category.
2. M.Sc, M.Phil, M.Pharm, MCA
Students procuring any one of the eligibility criteria can apply for the above projects
a. Students studying in Institutions of National Importance like IITs, NITs, and Central Universities etc.
b. Students studying in Government or Government aided colleges/universities and there course is in the fully aided category.
c. For any subjects where there is no enough courses in Government or aided colleges or no enough students in Government or aided colleges, students from self financing institutions/universities will be considered.
Application Procedure
Students satisfying the eligibility criteria can apply as with following documents
- Detailed Curriculum vitae ( CV)
- Attested Copies of the marks cards upto the last semester/year.
- Recommendation / Introduction by the HOD/Principal of the college in the format given below.
- Duration and likely commencement of the project work at NIIST
- A request letter by the candidate seeking the placement for the project work.
Period of Project work
Admissions to carry out project work would be held only 4 times in year, viz. 1 st January, 1 st April, 1st July and 1 st October every year. All the students seeking permission to carry out project work in this laboratory may join to any one of the above quarter as mentioned above. NIIST will not entertain the admission of any candidates during the period other than mentioned above.
Last date for application
The last date for the receipt of the applications requesting for permission to carry out the project work in the laboratory would be as below:
31st January – for admission to batch commencing from 1st April.
30th April – for admission to batch commencing from 1st July
31st July – for admission to batch commencing from 1st October
31st October – for admission to batch commencing from 1st January.
Selection Procedure
Only those applications completed in all respects and relevant enclosures and received by the Director and forwarded to APC before the last date mentioned above would be considered and short listed. The merit list prepared based on the marks obtained in the last semester/year of the PG course would be prepared area wise and sent to respective divisions. Heads of the Divisions in consultation with the other scientists/technical officers , would recommend only those applications to APC based on the merit and other considerations such as educational background of the candidate, facilities available to carry out the project and requirement of such students in the ongoing R&D Programmes and MOU signed if any with the Universities. Only those candidates who have been recommended for the admission by the respective divisions/sections would be intimated through the HOD/Principal of the University/ college by APC for the admission. No correspondence will be made in respect of applications not recommended for the admission.
Project Fee
Students studying in Institutions of National Importance like IITs, NITs, and Central Universities, Government or Government aided colleges and if their course is in the fully aided category, need not pay any fees if they are admitted to NIIST for their project work.
All students admitted to the project work from self financing institutions only should pay the following fee. The payment should be made in the form of DD drawn in favour of Director, NIIST Trivandrum, payable at Trivandrum. Payment should be made at the time of admission.

The candidate selected for the admission to carry out the project work should come in person and get admitted to the Project work on the date and time fixed and intimated to respective HOD/Principal of the candidate without fail. He/she has to pay the required project fee in the form of DD and also should give a declaration form ( supplied by APC) dully filled in and signed by the HOD/Principal of the college/University of the student. Admission will not be made in the absence of the above.
Format for Recommendation / Introduction by the HOD/Principal of the college
Forfeiture of Allotment
All the students selected for carrying out the project work and intimated for admission should come in person on the date and time fixed and intimated to them without fail. Candidates fail to join without prior approval from APC, on the above date would forfeit the offer of placement.
Terms and conditions
- The placement of the student and the selection of the Research Guide would be based on the sole discretion of the Director/ HODs in the laboratory.
- Student’s admission to the project work and their stay in the laboratory is restricted to the time and duration of the project and will not be extended. Additional time if required has to be foreseen in advance and necessary request has to be made to APC through the research supervisor for the extension of the project duration well in advance.
- During their tenure of the project work, candidates have to follow strictly all the rules and regulations, timings of the laboratory. Strict compliance of safety rules by the students inside the laboratory is a must. The laboratory will not take any responsibility for the safety of the students beyond office hours.
- The number of students admitted for the project work is based only on the requirement of R&D sections/Divisions and has no bearing on any quota
- There will be no guide from the University/college for this work. However, there could be co-guide from the department if desired. But this should be informed clearly to NIIST with the name of person in the letter from the HOD/Principal.
- NIIST will have full intellectual property right on the work carried out by the student. However, if a paper is published out of the work, the student(s) name will be considered for the authorship depending up on his/her contribution.
- University/College undertakes the responsibility for any misconduct by the student(s).
- Thesis/dissertation title/cover page will have the title of the work, name of the university where it would be submitted, student’s name, his/her registration number (optional), name of NIIST scientist as supervisor, Division/Department where the work is carried out at NIIST and month and year of submission. This pattern has to be followed strictly by all the students irrespective of the guidelines stipulated for the same from the respective University/college.
- Students are required to prepare their thesis in required number of copies and get all the certificates signed in original in all the copies from their Department /college and finally get them signed in original by the research guide at National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Trivandrum. TWO copies of the thesis/dissertation have to be submitted to the Research Guide at NIIST.
- Any violations on the above would be viewed seriously and non compliance by the candidates/colleges/University would result in total rejection of applications from the Department/college in future.
