Research Fellow required
A bright, enthusiastic and hardworking research fellow is required at the Department of Physics, DDU Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur, to work under the ISRO-GBP project on Aerosol Radiative Forcing over India (ARFI). The ARFI network is run by Space Physics Laboratory, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram.
The work will involve observing through various instruments, collecting data and its analysis to understand impact of urbanization and provide inputs for climate models.
Background: The atmospheric aerosol is a complex and dynamic mixture of solid and liquid particles from natural and anthropogenic sources. The natural background aerosol is present in the absence of human activity, while the urban aerosol is dominated by anthropogenic sources. The atmospheric aerosol has a profound effect on our lives. It affects global climate, local weather, visibility, and personal health. The black carbon (BC) aerosols absorb solar radiations over a wide spectrum and contribute toward global warming.
As part of the ARFI project of ISRO-GBP, a network of ground-based aerosol observatories have been set up across the length and breadth of India to estimate regional aerosol radiative forcing over the country. The various scientific outcomes of ARFI as well as observations by other individuals/groups and satellite imagaries indicate the presence of higher aerosol
abundance over the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) due to its rapid urbanization and industrial activities. As part of the chain of aerosol network in the foothills of Himalayas Gorakhpur (26.75 °N, 83.38 °E, 85 m above mean sea level) is a potential and strategic location for examining the long-range transport of aerosols. The continuous measurements of various aerosol parameters will also contribute to the regional aerosol database and climate models.
Location: Gorakhpur is situated in the Terai belt of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, in the foot hills of the Himalayan range with the Nepal border in its North at about 100 Km. It is 270 Km due East of Lucknow and about 220 Km North of Varanasi.
The DDU Gorakhpur University and its Department of Physics have national repute, particularly for research and teaching in the field of Astrophysics and Space Science.
Required Qualification: The applicant must have a good academic record with M.Sc. in Physics. Preference will be given to NET qualified candidates.
The fellowship will be as per University JRF rules i.e. Rs. 16,000/= plus HRA per month.
Initial appointment will be for 1 year with possibility of extension up to 3 years on the basis of performance.
